Collaborations with Zhejiang University, China

A Joint Cooperation Agreement (JCA) Signing Ceremony was held on 5 April 2013 between Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and Zhejiang University (ZJU), in Hangzhou, China. This signing coincided with the state visit of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam to China on 5-7 April 2013.

Under this agreement, a joint degree training in Chemical and Process Engineering has been introduced in August 2013 that incorporates engineering studies at both Faculty of Integrated Technologies (FIT) UBD and ZJU with the opportunity of industrial experience in China. This new programme is hoped to support the petrochemical industries in Brunei which include the petroleum, fine chemicals, pharmaceuticals and health, cosmetics, household care, agro and food, environment and electronics sectors.

One of the main industries involved is Heng Yi Group that has been pivotal in facilitating their partnerships with UBD. This programme aims to fill the gap boundaries and to provide link between, the public sector, other industries and the university, a triple helix of collaboration and cooperation resulting in new and more dynamic innovations and outcomes.

The collaboration with ZJU will also benefit UBD by strengthening research culture as well as building local human capacities, and in the long term, it hopes to aid in the diversification of the Brunei economy.

To date, a total of 43 engineering students enrolled at FIT has successfully received the award scholarships from Heng Yi Sdn Bhd.
